Life doesn’t always go as planned. There are moments when everything seems to be going in the right direction—until suddenly, an unexpected challenge forces us to pivot. But in those moments, we have a choice: to give up or to adapt and push forward.
A few years ago, I planned a Fitness & Nutrition Retreat designed to bring people together for a weekend of movement, relaxation, and transformation. Everything was set. Registrations were coming in, excitement was building—and then the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Like so many others, I faced a tough decision. Canceling seemed like the only option, but I knew that this retreat could be a powerful experience for those who needed a reset—physically, mentally, and emotionally. So instead of canceling, we pivoted by hosting a Virtual Fitness & Nutrition Retreat, giving people the opportunity to focus on their health from home.
At the same time, we also knew the value of an in-person experience, so we rescheduled the retreat for May 1-2, 2021, limiting attendance to fewer than 15 people to ensure a safe and intimate experience. The following year, in 2022, we held another retreat with the same small, personalized approach.
And despite the challenges of the times, all three retreats—both virtual and in-person—became some of the most rewarding experiences ever. We worked out together, ate nourishing meals, and had deep, meaningful conversations. The retreats became spaces of healing, growth, and resilience. Though I didn’t walk away with financial gain, I left with something far more valuable—the reminder that when we commit to showing up, no matter the circumstances, we always win.
Many of us face obstacles in our health journeys. You might feel discouraged, like progress isn’t happening fast enough, or life keeps throwing challenges your way. But I want to remind you: Setbacks don’t mean failure—they’re just detours to something greater. Whatever you’re facing today, keep pushing forward. Adjust, pivot if needed, but don’t stop moving. Because the greatest transformations—whether in fitness or in life—happen when we refuse to quit.
Stay strong, Walter Lewis
